VAN STAMPART Frans ( Antwerp 1675- Vienna 1750) (attributed) - Lot 100
VAN STAMPART Frans ( Antwerp 1675- Vienna 1750) (attributed) Portrait of Charles of Lorraine, oil on canvas, 76 x 63 cm, wooden frame and gilded stucco. 18th century OBSERVATION We would like to thank Dr. Gerhard Bauer of the Bundeswehr for the information provided that the figure depicted is an Austrian marshal with the cross of the Teutonic Order. After analysis it turns out that it is indeed Charles of Lorraine, Governor of the Austrian Netherlands since 1741, who died in Brussels in 1780, was appointed Austrian Marshal in 1740 and Grand Master of the Teutonic Order in 1760. A painting by Frans van Stampart, in a composition identical to the one we are presenting, is kept at the Brussels City Hall; it is an oil on canvas measuring 246cm x 189cm. An identical copy of the same painting is kept at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Brussels, painted by the painter Emile Philpkin, from Levels, in 1842 and with the authentic indication of the author "copy of 1842, after van Stampart kept at the Town Hall". From then on our unsigned painting, which is identical in composition to that of van Stampart and is from the same period, must be attributed to him.
