LAUTREAMONT (Isidore Ducasse, known as the Count of) The songs of Maldoror. Paris and Brussels, at all booksellers; Typ. by E. Wittmann, 1874 (19 x 12.5 cm) Bound in excellent condition with an ink black half-marroquin binding with corners, hand wallpapered, spine with 5 gilt nerves author and title, marbled paper covers, the spine was originally ink black but has become dark brown. For fear of criminal prosecution, the edition printed at the author's expense in 1869 was not put on sale by the Brussels publisher Albert Lacroix, who only provided a few copies to the author. In 1874, Jean-Baptiste Rozez, a Tarbais bookseller based in Brussels, bought back the stock of notebooks and tried to distribute the unsold copies under renewed cover and title page. Nothing helped, 'Les Chants de Maldoror' remained in the cellars of Rozez until 1885, when Max Waller, director of "La Jeune Belgique", created a first movement of interest around Lautréamont.
