Bronze bust of Empire Marshal Jean-de-Dieu... - Lot 1083 - 68 Art auction
Bronze bust of Empire Marshal Jean-de-Dieu Soult (1769-1851). Made Marshal of the Empire on 19 May 1804, he was considered by Napoleon, after the Battle of Austerlitz (1805) to which he made a decisive contribution, to be "the first manoeuvrer in Europe". Along with Davout, Lannes, Masséna and Suchet, he was one of the only marshals capable of leading an army in the absence of the Emperor1. Having become a peer of France (1815 then 1827), he also had an important political career, notably under the July Monarchy: Minister of War, he was the main founder of the Foreign Legion in 1831. Three times head of government, he holds the record for longevity in this position (9 years, 3 months and 17 days, including 6 years, 10 months and 20 days continuously). In 1847, he received from King Louis-Philippe the unique title of "Marshal General of France". Height: 15 cm.
