Typewriter Company was founded in Syracuse on January 1, 1903 by Lyman C. Smith and his brothers Hurlburt W., Wilbert L. and Monroe C., and adopted the name Smith Premier after the company refused to introduce a new machine. The Smith brothers and their previous employee, Carl Gabrielson conceptualized the L.C. Smith N 2 in 1904. The number 3 was invented in 1907 and produced until 1925.
