Observation
The painter used this mythological theme to depict the probable burning of the city of Kortrijk in the early 17th century, with the Trojan horse inside the walls and the soldiers coming out. In the foreground, villagers flee and others in the mountains to the left. On the right, boats on fire.
According to our research, there are four versions of this painting: one is in the Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Kortrijk, another in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Orléans; the other two are in private collections. One was sold at Dorotheum on June 16, 2011 and the second is presented here.
This painting is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the "Documentatiecentrum voor het vlaams kunstpatrimonium vzw".
